Frank L. Buckland Trophy

Frank L Buckland Trophy

The Frank Buckland Cup is presented each spring to the champions of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL).  Frank L. Buckland was born at Gravenhurst, ON, spent his early years at Guelph, attended the University of Toronto where he developed an interest in hockey, and moved to Peterborough in 1931 at age 29.  He coached junior and senior teams from 1932 to 1940, and in 1942 coached the city’s Sr. B team to an Ontario championship. In 1946, he was appointed to the OHA Executive and he became OHA President for a two-year term in 1955.  The year 1961 saw Frank named OHA Treasurer, a position he still held in 1975 when he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.  The CAHA in 1965 presented him with its Meritorious Award and the same year the OHA presented him with its Gold Stick Award. He was named a Life Member of the OHA in 1973 and the following year the Province of Ontario awarded him its Sports Achievement Award. That same year the OHA had the Junior A Championship Trophy name in his honour.  In Peterborough, Frank was an original member of the Memorial Centre Committee, won two civic awards and numerous other local honours. He died in 1991.
