Steve Novis
Steve Novis was a scoring threat every time he stepped on the ice in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League – for one franchise playing out of two locations north of Toronto. Novis played in the OPJHL for four seasons, from 1974-75 to 1977-78. He played his first season of junior hockey with the Seneca Flyers winning the league scoring championship as a rookie. Novis was drafted then drafted by the Ottawa 67’s in 1974 OHA Junior League Priority Draft in the 14th round, 161st pick from the Seneca Flyers. As things did not work out in Ottawa, Steve found himself back with Seneca. Novis moved north with the team in 1975 to York Region and Newmarket where he played his final three seasons. Mr. Consistency, he had high-production season total in points of 84, 75, 103 and 86 points. Novis’ biggest season was that 103-point campaign when he scored 46 goals and added 57 assists in 44 games and finished second in scoring to Jim Fox. Over his years in Newmarket, he was well decorated by winning many awards including the league scoring championship in 1976 and in 1977 his team scoring championship as well as the league’s Most Valuable Player Award. By the end of his career, Steve had amassed all the league scoring records in Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey for the Original Era including the most career goals with 134, the most career assists with 214 and the most career points with 348.
